Composition Challenges: What is it?

Each Composition Challenge explores the work and approach of a different contemporary composer, supporting curriculum learning and helping young people engage with creative composition. Composition Challenges are designed to be easy to use, flexible and open to all, from complete beginners to those with more experience.

A short film, supported by a teacher pack, will guide you through each challenge with a variety of activities to get your class composing. In some cases, we can also supplement your in-school work with specially tailored workshops (in person or online) with London Sinfonietta musicians and composers to offer feedback to your students and help them develop their work. We then invite schools to submit their compositions for us to share and perform in local school concerts, online concerts and at our flagship Sound Out Schools Concert each March.

Composition Challenges 2023-24 are supported by the Foyle Foundation. Our work in Gloucester is additionally supported by The Summerfield Charitable Trust and Andrew Johnson.
