Trish Clowes is writing a new ensemble work for the London Sinfonietta as part of our Changing Standards concert on Friday 18 November 2022.
Laura is writing a new 7' ensemble work for six players from London Sinfonietta and three jazz players as part of our Changing Standards concert which will also form part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. The brief for the commission has been to write a short new original work inspired by a favourite jazz standard. Alongside other new work from other jazz composers, the evening will also feature improvisations from those musicians, creating a fascinating dialogue between composed and improvised music.

Saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes is a BASCA British Composer Award winner and former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. She has been described as “an improviser to be reckoned with” (Downbeat Magazine) and “one of the most agile and original jugglers of improv and adventurous composition to have appeared in the UK in recent times” (John Fordham, the Guardian). All five of her releases for Basho Records have received critical acclaim, the last two featuring her band MY IRIS, who have toured worldwide and been hailed as “the jazz of the future” (Augsburger Allgemeine).
Clowes works in a variety of settings, most recently premiering a saxophone concerto by Joe Cutler with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Her performances (either with her band or as a soloist) include the Barbican, Toronto Jazz Festival, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall, Celtic Connections (with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra), Women in (e)motion Festival (Germany), National Opera House (Ireland), and making broadcasts for BBC 2 Proms Extra, BBC Radio 3 and Radio Bremen. Recent commissions include writing for the London Sinfonietta (a Sinfonietta Short for solo bass, and Sound Out schools project), BBC Concert Orchestra (BBC Radio 3) and Onyx Brass.
Alongside her work as a performer and composer Clowes has been curating her own new music project Emulsion since 2012, through which she has commissioned seventeen new works. She is also passionate about her roles as professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and ambassador for the charity Donate4Refugees.
