LESSONS FROM THE PAST

In the Voices of the Living

Southbank Centre's Purcell Room, London

Book
Mark Padmore © Marco Borggreve

A world premiere by Luke Bedford brings voices from the literary past into the present, performed by acclaimed tenor Mark Padmore.

“I began with the desire to speak with the dead.” Stephen Greenblatt

The London Sinfonietta once again joins forces with British composer Luke Bedford for the world premiere of In the Voices of the Living. Taking Greenblatt’s words as his inspiration, the work also draws on settings of Petrarch, Joyce, Leopoldi and Shakespeare, to examine how we learn from and draw on voices of the past to approach the issues of today.

Following the success of Padmore’s collaboration with London Sinfonietta in the 2017 commission of Tansy Davies’ opera, Cave, the tenor returns to the intimate setting of Southbank Centre's Purcell Room to bring to life Bedford’s songs in this extended programme.

Tom Service, described Luke Bedford’s 2006 London Sinfonietta commission Or Voit Tout En Aventure “one of the most outstanding pieces by any composer I’ve ever experienced”
