RESPONSE: ANDREAS GURSKY (MIRA CALIX)
Playing with perspective
Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre
Experience the work of Andreas Gursky from a new perspective, with live music by artist and composer Mira Calix. they talk about art, we talk about money is Calix’s latest commission from the London Sinfonietta, and is inspired by Gursky's iconic photograph Review (2015). It’s performed by Calix and London Sinfonietta musicians as part of Hayward Gallery’s major retrospective of Andreas Gursky’s work. Review depicts Germany’s most recent chancellors – Gerhard Schröder, Helmut Schmidt, Angela Merkel and Helmut Kohl in front of a painting by Barnett Newman. Mira Calix’s musical response refers to a quote by Oscar Wilde: “When bankers get together for dinner, they discuss Art. When artists get together for dinner, they discuss Money” and aptly mirrors the scene in the photograph.
This second in a series of gallery lates offers a unique experience of Gursky’s work, as the music captures the rhythm, colour and complexity of his photographs.

The image resonates with me in many ways, both personal and political. The core visual thematic is this relationship between art, politics and money. A relationship that I have investigated and continue to do so in my practice. Mira Calix
