LADIES IN BLOOMERS

A 'hortimusical' celebration of forgotten female gardeners

Story Garden, Ossulston St, London NW1 1DF

Book

Experience a unique outdoor performance at the intersection of music and horticulture. Set in a hidden garden in the heart of King’s Cross, this immersive event features the London Sinfonietta, four singers, and on-stage gardeners.

Commissioned as part of the London Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future scheme, composer Omri Kochavi debuts Ladies in Bloomers - a striking new work inspired by Fiona Davison’s An Almost Impossible Thing. This piece is a powerful tribute to resilience, history, and nature, bringing to life the stories of pioneering women gardeners from the early 20th century.

The inspiration stems from Davison’s discovery of letters written by Olive Harrison, a talented gardener denied a scholarship by the Royal Horticultural Society “on account of being female.” Her book illuminates the lives of six early female professional gardeners through their personal letters and radical experiences.

The performance takes place in The Story Garden, an outdoor community space created by The British Library in partnership with Global Generation.
