The Victoria line carries 200 million of us across London each year. Through 2016 Art on the Underground is presenting Underline, a project that draws its inspiration from this pivotal, fast, subterranean line. Alongside visual artists Liam Gillick, Giles Round, Zineb Sedira and Turner Prize-winning architectural collective Assemble, Art on the Underground’s first ever commissioned composer – Matt Rogers – will create a series of site-specific works. They will be performed by the London Sinfonietta on every Sunday in April, bringing new music to thousands of journeys.
Sunday 24 April is the last in the series, and sees eight musicians set out from various stations along the Victoria line, travelling to King’s Cross St. Pancras where they join fellow players for the world premiere of an ensemble piece.
Drawing visually on the Victoria line’s unique tile motifs, the players' costumes have been designed by Jenny Hayton with graphic works by Fraser Muggeridge studio.
