Pablo's work is based on his mother's life and narrates a transformation of life in relation to society through the lens of a drug addict as they seek to fulfil their paramount need to be loved. He hopes that this project may spread awareness of drug use and the mental health implications of it. Just for today is set to premiere on June 12 2025.
Pablo Martinez is a Brazilian composer, conductor, and educator based in London. His music, spanning concert and stage works, is driven by a fascination with storytelling, poetic imagery, and the expressive potential of sound in theatre. From intimate chamber pieces exploring fragility and loss to large-scale interdisciplinary collaborations, his compositions blur the boundaries between music, text, movement, and electronic manipulation.
Pablo has collaborated with leading ensembles and artists, including the London Sinfonietta, Red Note Ensemble, Chamber Choir Ireland, and Scottish Freelancers Ensemble. His recent work explores the tension between poetry and structure, and the intersection of words and music, often engaging with theatre and opera. Recent projects include What Now, Mané?, a hybrid poetry-opera performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Susie Sainsbury Theatre, and Look @ Me, a dance-theatre collaboration with Constant Vigier. Currently, he is developing Peel, a surreal operetta about bananas yearning to rot in peace, as part of the Opera Makers program at the Royal Academy of Music. In his upcoming work for the London Sinfonietta, continues this exploration, integrating singer, electronics, and ensemble.
Beyond composition, Pablo is active as a music director and enjoys working collaboratively with performers, often taking a hands-on role in the rehearsal process. He was Musician in Residence at Gordonstoun School (2023–24) and is currently exploring new approaches to teaching composition through performance practice.
His work has been recognised with numerous awards, including selection for the London Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future scheme, mentored by Donnacha Dennehy. He was also the winner of the Nevis Ensemble Wind and Brass Competition and runner-up in the Dinah Wolfe Memorial Prize (2022).
Pablo holds a first-class BMus (Hons) in Composition from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he studied with Linda Buckley, David Fennessy, and Stuart MacRae, and is currently completing his Master’s degree at the Royal Academy of Music.
