After two months of lockdown, and with all of our upcoming concerts cancelled, we at the London Sinfonietta came to you – our audiences, friends and generous individual supporters – to ask for help. We wanted to keep our successful initiatives from the spring going, and to offer more work and opportunities to our players and composers, whose own working lives have been so negatively affected by the Covid crisis. To do this, we urgently needed to raise £10,000 to make sure we could go on making new music online this autumn.
Thanks to you, we are delighted to have raised an incredible £10,947 – exceeding our target by almost 10% and catalysing a whole new programme of work to be delivered this autumn, online, for free.
The first of these new initiatives was ReAssemble Online – a free afternoon of contemporary classical music to kick start our 2020-21 season NEW TIMES / NEW MUSIC.
Live streamed from the Southbank Centre on Sunday 25 October, the one-day online festival – hosted by Jumoké Fashola and Zoë Martlew – featured new works by Shiva Feshareki and Gavin Higgins and a new performance of Dai Fujikura’s made-for-internet composition Longing from Afar. This event also featured interviews with artists such as Elaine Mitchener and George Benjamin, as well as relays of pre-recorded events such as Richard Ayres' The Garden.
This exciting afternoon of new music was only possible due to the generosity of individuals who supported our campaign. Without your contribution, we wouldn’t have been able present this programme, or offer opportunities to musicians and artists during this difficult time. We are so grateful for your kindness, which is allowing us to uphold our commitment to keep presenting the best new music of our time.
All our events this season are being presented online for free, so that as many people as possible can experience the best new music being written today. But if you are enjoying our live streams, please do consider donating at whatever level you can afford to support the London Sinfonietta’s work and musicians both now and in the future – in schools, on the concert platform and in the community. It might be the price of a coffee, or the cost of a ticket to one of our live events.
