Programme Note: "this piece was inspired by the Billie Holiday composition God Bless the Child. The original tune was a biting critique of economic inequality, how wealth breeds wealth and poverty breeds poverty. We live in a system that holds the will of the free market over everything; the inevitable result of this is a society like that described in Holiday’s song."
Elliot Galvin's God Bless the Free Market was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta. It was performed and recorded in November 2022 at our concert "Changing Standards", a concert of new original compositions inspired by traditional standards.
