In C Programme

In C Piero Tauro

Envelop in a hypnotic interplay of music and dance: the London Sinfonietta partners with world-renowned German dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests for the cross-disciplinary UK premiere of Terry Riley's groundbreaking open composition In C. Revolutionary at the time of its writing (1964), it is considered the first piece of minimalist music.

Built using 53 fragments of sound and choreography, performers improvise within a structured framework to create an ever-evolving spectacle of melody, polyphony, and movement.

The length of the piece remains variable, as does the number of musicans and dancers. It is a piece about being part of a group as an individual rather than being an individual within a group.

Presented in collaboration with the Southbank Centre as part of their cross art-form festival Multitudes.

Terry Riley

Composer and performer Terry Riley is one of the founders of music’s Minimalist movement. His early works, notably In C (1964), pioneered a form in Western music based on structured interlocking repetitive patterns. The influence of Riley’s hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated Eastern-flavored improvisations and compositions is heard across the span of contemporary and popular music.
